Vietnam vet hears call of duty, heads to Afghanistan

During a commander's call last year, Brig. Gen. Robert C. Nolan II, the Air Force Flight Test Center commander, asked Airmen who have been deployed to stand and be recognized for their service. He then asked those Airmen who have been deployed multiple times to raise their hands.

Most of the Airmen raised their hands high.

That may be regular life and duty for these warriors, but for one 95th Communications Squadron civilian, seeing all the hands in the air was a call to duty.

Air Force opens first ambulatory surgery center in National Capital Region

Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic has recently transitioned to the Air Force's first ambulatory surgery center in the National Capital Region, opening a newly renovated state-of-the-art 18-bed same day surgery unit.

"We are well on our way to becoming the premier ambulatory surgery center of choice for military beneficiaries in the NCR, specifically providing first-class service to our southern Maryland beneficiaries," said Lt. Col. Shawn Zarr, commander, 779th Surgical Operations Squadron.

AF announces master sergeant selections

More than 5,400 technical sergeants were informed this morning that they have been selected for promotion to master sergeant, the first rung of the senior noncommissioned officer corps, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

Click here to see the list of selectees.

Officials selected 5,464 of 19,809 eligible technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant for a 27.58 percent selection rate.

AF selects emerging leader program participants

Six Air Force officers were selected for the 2012 National Defense University Center for the Study of Mass Destruction Program for Emerging Leaders, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

The purpose of the program is to foster a community of rising U.S. government leaders with the awareness and skills to respond to the dangers of weapons of mass destruction, said Master Sgt. Teresa Dixon, the AFPC officer development education superintendent.

Air Force members selected to participate are Maj. Matthew Stanford, of the U.S. Air Force Academy; Capt. Matthew Butler, of Air Combat Command; Capt. Erik Carlson, of U.S. Air Forces in Europe; Capt. Amber Ortiz, of Air Education and Training Command; Capt. Robert Schoeneberg, of Air Force Global Strike Command; and Capt. Eric Thompson, of Air Force Materiel Command.

Airman found dead at Fairchild

An Airman attending training at the 336th Training Group was found dead in his dormitory May 12.

Airman 1st Class John Bradshaw was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m. May 12 by American Medical Response. The cause of his death is under investigation.

"Fairchild is saddened by the death of Airman Bradshaw," said Col. Paul Guemmer, the 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander. "His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

"When we lose an Airman, it's felt by everyone," Guemmer said. "He will be sorely missed."

Single staffing tool goes Air Force wide

Beginning this summer, all Air Force civil service employees will have transitioned to a resume based system when seeking new positions for Air Force civilian vacancies worldwide.

In 2010, the Air Force Personnel Center announced the transition to a single staffing tool for all Air Force job seekers utilizing USA Staffing to post all job announcements on USAJobs.gov. The final implementation to the single staffing tool will transition Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., employees in late July.

Security forces NCO becomes ninth female to earn sniper qualification

A security forces sergeant from the 99th Ground Combat Training Squadron completed Air Force sniper school April 27, becoming the U.S. military's ninth officially-qualified female sniper.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Alyssa Gomez, 99th Ground Combat Training Squadron instructor, graduated from the Close Precision Engagement Course, a challenging 19-day course at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The course teaches advanced marksmanship and military scouting skills to Air Force security forces members, whose career field specializes in the protection of Air Force personnel and resources. CPEC is the only U.S. military sniper school open to females, though its stringent graduation requirements are the same regardless of gender.

Fuels flight wins Air Force award

The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management flight won the American Petroleum Institute trophy for best fuels flight in the Air Force for 2011.

The "Black Knights" were selected over Sheppard AFB's 364th Training Squadron fuels flight and Kadena's 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels flight to win its first API trophy since 2003. From September 30, 2010, to October 1, 2011, the Fuels Flight has issued more than $521 million of fuels/cryogenic material to more than 17,000 aircraft in support of five combatant commanders.

Survey allows Airmen to speak frankly to leaders

Would you like to tell your leaders what you think? You have that opportunity through the 2012 Air Force Climate Survey.

The survey officially kicked off Monday, and soon all Airmen will receive email invitations with a personalized link to enable them to share their thoughts, said Nicole Gamez, Air Force Manpower Agency. The survey will be available online through June 22.

The Air Force Climate Survey solicits opinions and perceptions of Air Force active duty, Reserve, Guard and civilian personnel on a wide range of topics, including resources, recognition, satisfaction and unit performance.
