Maintenance advisers certify first-ever AAF expediter

Maintenance advisers recently certified the first Afghan air force flightline expediter at Kandahar Air Wing.

A direct maintenance commander delegate on the flightline and an expediter is responsible for efficiently utilizing manning and resources to effectively execute the flight schedule agreed upon by both maintainers and operators.

Advisers said the new capability will ensure better on time takeoffs and flightline management and will be beneficial because there will now be a central focal point directing unity of effort.

Falcons finish season 7-5, defeat CSU 45-21

The U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons soared to a 45-21 victory on a cold Saturday night Nov. 26 against the Rams of Colorado State University here.

The win brings the Falcons to 7-5-0 overall for the 2011 season and bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive year. This is also the first time in school history that the Falcons have had five consecutive seven-win seasons.

The Academy moves to 30-19-1 all-time against CSU. The Ram-Falcon trophy, awarded to the winner of this front-range rivalry, will remain in Colorado Springs for the sixth straight year.

Don’t Settle

Twenty Seven. A nondescript number, a multiple of 3 and 9, somebody's jersey number, maybe your age or for me, the number of years I've been in this incredible Air Force. I say that I've been in for 27 years to let you know my experience of the great changes we've undergone as we continue to represent our nation to the world. As Bob Dylan said, "Times, they are a-changin'."

We're now told there's a budget crunch. We're told that personnel cuts are looming with a reduction in force and date of separation rollback boards again chopping into our ranks. We face an ever-changing and more complex mission set. In the last 25 years, borders and alliances around the world have changed, and now countries jockey for position to stand up to the U.S.

Former prisoner of war receives Purple Heart

Almost 67 years after being shot down during a bombing raid during World War II, former 1st Lt. Edward J. Moppert Jr. received his Purple Heart medal Nov. 26 at the World War II Memorial here.

A few years ago, Moppert's daughter, Lorene Moppert-Keipper, started organizing his military records and realized he was never formally presented his Purple Heart medal. Through a friend of her husband's, she contacted Maj. Fred Hixson at Air Force Analysis Assessments & Lessons Learned (A9) at the Pentagon and asked if there was anything he could do. Hixson enlisted the help of his co-workers and went about the task of getting the medal presented to Moppert.

CSAF signs munitions realignment program action directive

 Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz signed the Program Action Directive Nov. 20 that details the transfer of munitions squadrons responsible for nuclear mission support from Air Force Materiel Command to Air Force Global Strike Command.

The realignment has formally begun and will complete this December. The realignment of functions will place the command, control and authority for the operational mission with the wing commander.

This is another step in continuing to strengthen the nuclear enterprise. Under a previous move, these munitions squadrons were consolidated under AFMC's Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center.

US, Kyrgyz officials participate in joint exercise

Emergency responders from the Kyrgyz Ministries of Emergency Services, Interior and Defense participated in a joint explosive ordnance disposal and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives response exercise with their American counterparts Nov. 22 here.

The exercise was part of a continuing partnership information exchange program that familiarizes Kyrgyz experts with Air Force CBRNE and EOD tactics, techniques and procedures.

For the scenario the joint CBRNE and EOD teams were sent to clear an apartment that intelligence reports indicated was being used by an extremist cell to make dirty bombs. The EOD teams entered the apartment with a robot to check for explosives devices and to test the room for radioactive materials. They then sent a team in with equipment to X-ray a suspicious package.

Program reduces disability benefits waiting period after separation

Air Force officials held a training conference recently to teach those operating the Integrated Disability Evaluation System how to process service members who, because of medical conditions, may no longer be able to serve in the Air Force.

The conference, held jointly between the Air Force Personnel Center and the Air Force Medical Operations Agency, was attended by more than 250 base-level physical evaluation board liaison officers, who guide service members through the disability evaluation system, and medical physicians, who recommend service members for the disability evaluation process.

Schriever AFB incident resolved peacefully

The 50th Security Forces Squadron member who barricaded himself inside the deployment processing building here surrendered peacefully to authorities at about 8 p.m. on Nov. 21.

The individual is currently being detained by law enforcement officials. No one was injured or harmed during the incident.

"We are grateful for all of our first responders and their professionalism that was critical to the peaceful resolution of this situation," said Col. James P. Ross, the 50th Space Wing commander.

Binge drinking often a problem during holidays

The holiday season is upon us, and it's a time when many people find themselves celebrating at parties where alcoholic beverages are being served. Therefore, it is important that everyone know what they are dealing with when it comes to consuming alcohol.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports that in 2009, there were 1.4 million driving-under-the-influence arrests and drunk drivers claimed the lives of 10,839 people. Binge drinking and drinking and driving are more likely to occur during the holiday season when people are off work and celebrating the season.
