Air Force BDU officially history

There are two things you should not see Nov. 1 -- Halloween costumes and the Air Force Battle Dress Uniform.

In 2006, the Airman Battle Uniform became authorized for wear and a date was set for final phase-out of the woodland camouflage-patterned BDU's.

Previously announced to be effective Oct. 1 of 2011, a more recent Air Force Instruction 36-2903, "Dress and Appearance of Air Force Personnel" pushed the date back to Nov. 1. This applies to all Air Force components.

Air Force’s top maintainers recognized

Two Air Force aircraft maintainers were recognized by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz during a ceremony here Oct. 28 for their outstanding contributions to the Air Force mission.

Capt. William Bernecker, who is assigned to the 48th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, and Master Sgt. Richard Piltz, who is assigned to the 923rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., were awarded the 2011 General Lew Allen Jr. Trophy.

Falcons shut out Lobos 42-0

Falcon football got back to its winning ways with a 42-0 shutout of the University of New Mexico Lobos Oct. 29 here.

The U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons left defenders in the dust from their first touch of the football, when defensive back Jon Davis returned the first Lobo punt for 40 yards to give the Falcons' offense a short field on their first possession.

Senior quarterback Tim Jefferson spread the ball around to lead the Falcons downfield in eight plays and set them up for the score at the 1-yard line.

A mentor by any other name…

A new assignment. A new project. An unexpected or planned change in your life. The need for a decision in a situation you haven't faced before. These are all times when it is great to have someone to give you advice and counsel. Naturally, you want someone who has been through the experience and dealt with it successfully.

When most people think of mentoring, they generally conjure up a picture of the elder statesman or the very successful person who is older and of a higher professional status. How else can they help you unless they have seen it all, experienced it all, and overcome it all?

Air Force vice chief testifies on readiness

The Air Force vice chief of staff provided the Air Force perspective on readiness in an age of austerity to the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness here Oct. 27.

Gen. Phil Breedlove joined his Army, Navy and Marine Corps counterparts in discussing the challenges expected as the services look to find big budget savings over the next 10 years.

"These are challenging times," Breedlove said. "The Air Force has been at war for more than two decades."

CSAF presents Air Force Cross, Silver Star in Hurlburt ceremony

Two Air Force Special Operations Command combat controllers were presented military decorations here Oct. 27 by the Air Force chief of staff for exhibiting extraordinary heroism in combat.

Staff Sgt. Robert Gutierrez Jr. was presented the Air Force Cross and Tech. Sgt. Ismael Villegas was presented the Silver Star by Gen. Norton Schwartz in a joint ceremony. The Air Force Cross is the service's highest award and is second only to the Medal of Honor. The Silver Star is awarded for valor, to include risk of life during engagement with the enemy.

New wind turbines help Air Force go green

Under Secretary of the Air Force Erin C. Conaton visited the Massachusetts Military Reservation in Cape Cod, Mass., Oct. 28 for a ribbon cutting ceremony for two new wind turbines.

The 1.5 megawatt wind turbines, in addition to an existing turbine, were built to offset electrical costs for powering numerous groundwater cleanup systems at the reservation.

The turbines will pay for all the Air Force's electric needs for groundwater remediation at the military reservation, saving more than $1.5 million per year, officials said. The turbines will also offset emissions generated by fossil-fueled power plants, reducing the Air Force's carbon footprint.

SECAF authorizes funds to assist flood-stricken Airmen

Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley recently authorized funding for skilled and licensed volunteers to travel to Minot, N.D., to perform home repairs for nearly 250 Airmen who remain displaced here following historic flooding this summer.

Secretary Donley signed into effect the memorandum for Emergency and Extraordinary Expenses Funds for Incentivizing Assistance to Flood Displaced Minot Airmen Oct. 23.

The initiative will help meet the demand for skilled tradesmen to assist with the large number of damaged homes impacted by the Souris River flood, which initially displaced more than 1,200 Airmen and their families.

Air Force releases major, captain reduction-in-force board results

Commanders Air Force-wide were notified Oct. 24 of the results of the Calendar Year 2011 Reduction-in-Force Board held at the Air Force Personnel Center here in September.

The CY11 RIF board, which considered captains and majors in the Line of the Air Force competitive category, is part of the Air Force's fiscal 2011 force management program. The force management program blends voluntary and involuntary programs in order to meet the Air Force's congressionally mandated end-strength of 332,800 officers and enlisted Airmen by Sept. 30, 2012.
