Air Force officials are accepting nominations for the 63rd Annual Arthur S. Flemming Awards.
The Flemming awards recognize outstanding federal employees who made significant and extraordinary contributions to the federal government.
The three award categories are: managerial or legal achievement; basic science; and applied science, engineering and mathematics.
Nominations are open to federal employees and service members who have at least three, but no more than 15 years of service through Dec. 31, 2011. Each major command, field operating agency and direct reporting unit may submit one nomination per category.

Optimus Prime may have said "Autobots, roll out," but it was Hurlburt Field Air Commandos who rolled out the red carpet when the third installment of the Hollywood blockbuster "Transformers" franchise filmed here in September 2010.
Close to 50 Airmen from Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command and the 1st Special Operations Wing, as well as a few service members stationed in the local area, answered a casting call to take part in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

An Air Force team successfully launched the first Operationally Responsive Space prototype satellite aboard a Minotaur I launch vehicle at 11:09 p.m. EDT June 29 from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. ORS-1 deployed 12 minutes after launch.
This marks a great achievement by the Space and Missile Systems Center's Space Development and Test Directorate, the Operationally Responsive Space Office and their contractor teams, according to Col. Carol Welsch, the directorate's acting director and the ORS-1 mission director. ORS-1 is the Operationally Responsive Space Office's first operational prototype satellite and represents the potential of low-cost, tactically focused satellites designed to provide critical battlespace awareness capabilities to the joint warfighter.

The Defense Department's overseas medical research laboratories will play a key role in ensuring the readiness of deployed U.S. military forces well into the future, while also contributing to global health and U.S. partnership building around the world, the Pentagon's senior health affairs adviser said.
Dr. Jonathan Woodson, the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, called the overseas Army and Navy labs that have helped protect deployed service members for the past 60 years -- and civilians around the world as well -- "a national investment and a national treasure."

In an effort to address military spouses' employment challenges, the Defense Department launched a program June 29 to expand career opportunities for military spouses worldwide, and to recognize the skills and talents they bring to the employment table.
Flanked by military spouses and corporate leaders, top government and military officials unveiled the Military Spouse Employment Partnership during a ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce here. The partnership encompasses more than 70 employers who have committed to opening their doors to spouse employment.

The annual week-long combined exercise between Indonesian and U.S. Air Force personnel, known as Exercise Cope West, came to a close here June 24.
More than 70 Airmen from Yokota Air Base, Japan, and three C-130 Hercules aircraft with Yokota's 36th Airlift Squadron, as well as one Indonesian Air Force C-130, participated in the bilateral field training exercise, which was designed to enhance the readiness and combined interoperability between the two air forces.
According to Lt. Col. Pete Kelley, Yokota's Cope West detachment commander, the exercise was a success thanks to the efforts of Airmen working to launch aircraft from Halim and directing airdrops from the ground at the Gorda drop zone in Binguang district, Indonesia.

With summer in full swing and the July 4th weekend approaching, officials at the Air Force Safety Center want to remind Airmen of steps they can take to minimize the potential for mishaps.
Maj. Gen. Greg Feest, Air Force chief of safety, said although there are many activities to enjoy during the three-day weekend, each activity has its risks.
"I can't think of a better time to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends than the Fourth of July weekend," General Feest said. "As you celebrate our nation's birthday, I ask each of you to have a plan to reduce the risks and be a great wingman," he said.

In order to get "back to basics" and the original intent of National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the Air Force recently issued new program guidance entitled "Planning Requirements for the Environmental Impact Analysis Process."
The program will help Air Force installations, major commands, proponents and other environmental planning functions streamline their assessments of potential environmental impacts mandated by the NEPA before they take proposed actions.
PREIAP was developed by the Environmental Planning Center of Excellence at the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment here to support the "back to basics" initiative by Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Logistics Terry Yonkers.

As part of a continuing Air Force initiative to provide on-site civilian personnel recruitment support, Air Force Personnel Center officials will stand up an operating location at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, July 1. This is the last of five AFPC OLs to support commanders and missions at the Air Force's large civilian centers.
"AFPC will continue to work jointly with Air Force Materiel Command, Aeronautical Systems Center and Wright-Patterson AFB on the transition of civilian personnel staffing workload to the OL," said Michelle LoweSolis, AFPC civilian force integration director. "The OL will report to AFPC leadership while meeting the mission requirements of Wright-Patterson AFB."
