Airmen from across the world participate in Silver Flag

December 30th, 2010 Comments off
Airmen from around the world came together at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe training area recently for a weeklong contingency operations training exercise.

During Silver Flag, Airmen from several different career specialties work together to learn how to build and sustain a base in a contingency environment consisting of five days of academic training, followed by a day of practical application.

"The environment the students encounter simulates a medium threat location that allows their leadership to guide every move from convoys to redeployment," said Master Sgt. Lamont Hall, the 435th Construction and Training Squadron Heavy Repair Contingency Training Section chief.

Virtual inprocessing simplifies civilian PCS

December 30th, 2010 Comments off
Revisions in the civilian permanent-change-of-station orders process at the Air Force Personnel Center are intended to save time and money, and reduce errors for hiring officials, relocating employees and personnelists, officials said.

The new civilian PCS process is conducted virtually through the Civilian Virtual Inprocessing system, or cVIP, that is available on the Air Force personnel services website.

"There used to be three or four different documents from different sources that had to be attached to an e-mail and sent to a selectee," said Maili Peters, a systems specialist at AFPC. "Now there's one online questionnaire that selectees use to provide all the information. It's easier and faster now."

Senior Master Sgt. Mike Flake, an HH-60G Pave Hawk flight engineer with the 305th Rescue Squadron here, had been flying a training mission Dec. 22 around Tucson, Ariz., where his unit trains regularly.

Upon clocking out, he was home by 9:30 p.m., enjoying family time, when he received a call from a Pima County Search and Rescue official requesting his help.

"They told me a female hiker had fallen and they thought she had broken her leg and back," Sergeant Flake said.

First cadre of deployment transition facilitators headed home

December 29th, 2010 Comments off
Ten minutes into his first mission as a convoy commander, everything had gone as wrong as it possibly could for Tech. Sgt. Lorenzo Zapata.

"The truck was engulfed in flames, you couldn't even recognize it," he said. "And the blood trail from the truck to the median looked like an animal (had been) slaughtered. I hate to use that, but it was so much blood."

The trail led to one of his Airmen, who was critically wounded when an accelerant-laden roadside bomb tore through the bottom of the convoy's lead Humvee on a spring day in 2007 near Camp Speicher, Iraq.

Combat camera Airmen learn battlefield forensics

December 29th, 2010 Comments off
It was a first for the Air Force when a cadre of instructors from Six3 Systems Inc. arrived here to teach a battlefield forensics course to 4th Combat Camera Squadron Airmen.

In the past, company officials taught the course to only Army and Marine Corps units, but 4th Combat Squadron officials recognized the need for Air Force photographers to learn the information as well.

Combat camera teams, typically composed of a photographer and videographer, accompany mounted and dismounted patrols to document military operations worldwide. On patrol, these visual-imagery specialists could find themselves as an integral part of crime-scene investigation or battle-damage assessment.

The parade goes on…

December 29th, 2010 Comments off
I clearly recall the events of Friday, Aug. 14, 2009. It was a memorable day in grand proportions, a day worthy of sharing with past, present and future Airmen. I had the great fortune and honor to attend back-to-back ceremonies unique to the military profession.

The day began at the Lackland Air Force Base parade ground on a sultry summer day in San Antonio. It was a special day, a day to celebrate. It was a day to congratulate 753 Basic Military Trainee graduates, our Air Force's newest Airmen.

VA program helps families help their veterans

December 29th, 2010 Comments off
"Families At Ease" is a new program developed by Department of Veterans Affairs officials that works with family members and friends of veterans of any era to help them help their veteran get care.

Many veterans are reluctant to get help for the symptoms or difficulties they are having, or may not recognize their need for help.

It could be difficulty at work or at home, problems sleeping, driving too fast, or drinking too much. Or it could just be that they seem irritable or sad.
