New capability brings live JTAC training closer to the real thing

October 29th, 2010 Comments off
A new capability to broadcast a combined live, virtual and constructive, or LVC, picture using distributed models and simulations brings live training for joint terminal attack controllers closer to training like they fight.

The new capability was developed by members of the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation in Orlando, Fla. The distributed radio frequency broadcast mode technical support was provided by engineers from the Joint Technology Center-Systems Integration Laboratory at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., and the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk.  Exercise Green Flag East 11-1 was used as a test bed.

Wanted: Energy vampire slayers

October 29th, 2010 Comments off
An "energy vampire," or phantom load, is energy that continues to be drawn by appliances or accessories when they are turned off or disconnected.

The following is a list of easy steps anyone can take at work and home to kill energy vampires once and for all:

-- Use daylight instead of electric light when possible.
-- When artificial lighting is necessary, opt for compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFLs use 75 percent less energy, emit 75 percent less heat, and last 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs. Even with all that saved energy, they should still be turned off anytime the room will be unoccupied for more than a few minutes.

Air Force school focuses on cybersecurity

October 29th, 2010 Comments off
"The wars of the future will be fought in the cyber domain" sounds like a bad movie tagline from 20 years ago, but it's becoming truer by the day, and the Air Force is readying troops for that battle.

Brig. Gen. Walter D. Givhan, the commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, discussed the importance of cybersecurity and the newest class of students graduating from the AFIT Center for Cyberspace Research Oct. 27 during a "DOD Live" bloggers roundtable.

Port Dawg Challenge tests skills, strengthens camaraderie

October 29th, 2010 Comments off
Out on the tarmac, noise from a C-130 Hercules drowns out the sounds of morning. Its four engines are still running with no plans to stop. Five Air Force Reservists brave the hot gusts from the jet's propellers and rush toward the ramp, which they lower to the ground. The Airmen load a Humvee and a huge cargo pallet aboard the jet, then, as quickly as they packed them in, they haul them out.

An umpire stops the clock and logs their time.

This event -- known as Engines Running Off/On Load -- is just one of 11 that make up Air Force Reserve Command's inaugural Port Dawg Challenge underway here. The PDC includes tests of speed and accuracy in a variety of scenarios common to aerial porters.

Seeing the signs of domestic abuse

October 29th, 2010 Comments off
Rarely do perpetrators of domestic abuse let their behavior, or the result of their abuse, be witnessed or seen by anyone else. Unless you directly witness the abuse firsthand, there is no surefire way to tell if someone is being abused.

Abusers can be of any gender, age, race, economic status and personality type.

Victims should not necessarily be stereotyped as "passive" or as having low self-esteem.

So how do you know if someone is being abused? It is critical to know some of the covert signs of domestic violence.

Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Carrol H. "Howie" Chandler spoke about Air Force efficiency initiatives Oct. 28 as part of the Military Strategy Forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies here.

"I don't think anybody in the Air Force will argue that we can't be more efficient at what we do," said General Chandler, pointing out that a focus on efficiencies is not new to the service.

Air Force Smart Operations, known as AFSO21, is a continuous improvement process Air Force leaders implemented several years ago that incorporates portions of the Lean and Six Sigma process improvement tools into an eight-step problem-solving model.

Motorcycle group supports military funerals

October 28th, 2010 Comments off
As the U.S. Supreme Court contemplates whether protestors outside military funerals are protected under First Amendment free-speech rights, a motorcycle group that travels the country attending those funerals as a show of support and respect rides on, undeterred by the political fray.

About 200,000 members of the Patriot Guard Riders attend military funerals to honor those who died for or served their country and to support their grieving families, said Bill Richart, chairman of the group's national board of directors. They also escort the bodies of fallen servicemembers as they arrive from Dover Air Force Base, Del., for burial in their hometowns across America.
