September 29th, 2010 Comments off
Leaders of the 375th Air Mobility Wing highlighted the importance of the wingman concept to prevent suicides during a day-long Suicide Prevention Field Day Sept. 23.

Officials from various base agencies hosted the event and helped Airmen focus on their ability to save another's life simply by being there.

"We have to help people deal with stress," said Col. Michael Hornitschek, 375th AMW commander. "That's one of the goals of comprehensive airman fitness: to give Airmen and their families the tools to deal with the unique stressors that sometimes accompany military service. Lives are saved every single day by wingmen."

Officials implement new training model

September 29th, 2010 Comments off
Given the complexities of today's combat missions and the inherent, life-threatening dangers faced by Airmen today, it is critical that Airmen receive effective training before engaging in battle. To provide Airmen with the most realistic training environment away from the battle space, Air Force leaders have implemented a new vision and governance structure for Modeling and Simulation (M&S).

Modeling and Simulation is one of the ways leaders are enabled to organize, train, educate, equip, and employ current and future air, space and cyberspace forces for a full range of operations.

Arriving home after deploying to a war zone can bring new challenges to military members. Many discover that their fight is not over and they end up facing an unseen enemy, with sometimes serious consequences. That enemy is post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to Veterans Affairs officials, PTSD is an anxiety disorder that may affect individuals who have experienced extremely stressful and traumatic events. Such events may include witnessing the loss of human life, as well as being a victim of a violent attack.

Secret weapon: Airmen initiative can shape our future

Anyone who has served in or around the military has a favorite story they love to tell about the frustrations of dealing with "the bureaucracy."

We're not always so willing to admit that sometimes we're part of the problem. We like to think of the bureaucracy as a formless entity out there slowing down the work we need to get done. But the truth is that bureaucracy is often us.

If we're honest with ourselves, we'll recognize we've all had our moment in the bureaucratic sun, a time when we were too overwhelmed or too tired -- or too afraid -- to deal with change or new ideas. After all, saying "no" is easy and safe, and facilitating change is hard and risky.

Schriever Airmen get serious with Happy Hour

September 29th, 2010 Comments off
Schriever Air Force Base Airmen were invited Sept. 24 to "Happy Hour" by base leadership where jokes about nagging wives, drugs, sex and drunken behavior filled the auditorium of Building 300 here.

No, this wasn't a social-mixer, nor was it a happy hour, in the traditional sense.

"Happy Hour" is a comedy show and alcohol, drug, sexual assault prevention and suicide awareness training rolled into a one-hour presentation by one of America's top comedians, Bernie McGrenahan.

‘Heat’ is on at Hurlburt Field

September 29th, 2010 Comments off
On the same court where special operations Airmen conduct physical training, the Miami Heat, a National Basketball Association team, kicked off their preseason training camp at the Aderholt Fitness Center Sept. 28 here.

The week-long camp also marks the first time the team has taken training camp outside of Southern Florida.

"The only differences (of practicing here) are the choppers and airplanes outside and the military guys here," said Chris Bosh, a forward for the Heat, about practicing on a military installation. "But we're big on the same things, like teamwork, and that's part of the reason we're here. We can learn from the military environment and bring discipline to an organization. I honor and respect them, and we wouldn't be here without them."

Programs help Airmen pick up the pace

September 29th, 2010 Comments off
With the new Air Force physical training standards, many Airmen are looking for ways to gain a few extra points on their scores.

When it comes to the 1.5-mile run portion of the test, units are setting challenges and Airmen are starting programs designed to motivate testers and help them shave seconds to minutes off their time.

One such Airman is Staff Sgt. Eduardo DeSouza, an independent duty medical technician with the 48th Medical Operations Squadron.

Sergeant DeSouza started the PT Pacer program in July. Individuals give the time they wish to achieve on the run and a pacer is assigned to help them make that time.
