Air Force trauma care center consolidates with Army

As part of the move to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, Wilford Hall Medical Center, the Air Force's only level 1 trauma center, will discontinue trauma care beginning July 1.

All severely injured trauma patients from San Antonio, Bexar and surrounding counties, and South Texas, will go to nearby Brooke Army Medical Center or University Hospital in San Antonio, the other two leading trauma centers serving the region. The transition began June 22 when the hospital began diverting its trauma patients.

Tricare officials implement new formulary search tool

Beneficiaries and providers can use the new Tricare formulary search tool to find the most up-to-date information about prescription medications.

Located at http://pec.ha.osd.mil/formulary_search.php, the new formulary search tool allows beneficiaries to easily find which medicines are in the uniform formulary. These are available at all full-service military treatment facilities and covered by Tricare.

Once a user has identified if a drug is available, they can use the search tool to get information on a drug, such as restriction on use. The tool also shows if the medication is Tier One (with a $3 copay,) Tier Two (with a $9 copay) or non-formulary (requiring a $22 copay.) It also shows when a generic equivalent is required.

CMSAF visits 380th AEW, touts importance of Airmen’s mission

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James A. Roy visited the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing June 26 through 28 as part of his tour of bases in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

The Chief said it was important that he got to see the mission of the 380th AEW.

"I came here to view the mission and see how the Airmen are performing that mission," he said. "We have to make sure we are adequately training Airmen for the mission here and are also making sure they are properly equipped."

Officials announce 2010 AFA outstanding Air Force civilians

Air Force officials announced the winners of the 2010 Air Force Association Outstanding Air Force Civilian of the Year awards June 29.

Each year, AFA officials recognize four Air Force civilian employees for outstanding achievement in any career field. This year's recipients were:

- Eric Straight, an aircraft metals technology craftsman at Hurlburt Field, Fla., in the civilian wage employee category

- Christopher Deanes, the operational support office director at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., in the civilian program specialist category

Help for military children: Illinois governor signs state law easing school transitions

The governor of Illinois signed the Educational Opportunity for Military Children Act into law today during a formal ceremony here.

Gen. Duncan J. McNabb, the commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, served as host for Gov. Pat Quinn's visit.

The law is designed to make it easier for military families with school-aged children to transition to and from various schools.

With the governor's signature, Illinois also becomes the 35th state to join the nationwide Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

Survival, evasion, resistance and escape program enhanced by range support operations

Air Force officials incorporated Code of Conduct into its survival, evasion, resistance and escape program to help Airmen evade capture and sharpen their survival skills while in enemy territory.

The primary SERE training center at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., introduces soon-to-be specialists to six months of intense physical and mental conditioning before sending them out to teach programs and deploy around the world.

The 1st Special Operations Support Squadron range support flight offers refresher courses for Airmen to complete any necessary training requirements. SERE specialists are able to utilize multitude of resources and teachings from the 1st SOSS Range Support flight.

Ukrainian airmen visit Ramstein, gain knowledge of AF capabilities

Airlifters from the Ukrainian air force visited here June 21 through 25 to participate in an engagement focused on airlift interoperability.

The five-day trip showcased the 86th Airlift Wing's operation and support capabilities to the Ukrainian airmen.

"The goal of the visit was to assist the Ukrainians in advancing and modernizing their air force," said Capt. Brent Gaylord, a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules pilot. "Eventually, they'd like to increase their partnership in coalition forces with the U.S. and other countries."

Elementarily speaking, military members are heroes

As a lowly 2nd lieutenant, I don't receive many speaking invitations.

And by not many, I mean none.

The fact is, most folks would rather hear the introspective thoughts of a colonel, a general or a senior NCO as opposed to the incoherent ramblings of a butter bar. I completely understand that sentiment. Heck, I really wouldn't want to listen to myself, either.

However, last week when I was presented with an invitation to speak about my career in the Air Force Reserve, I jumped at the chance. At last, I finally had my opportunity to be just like the senior officers and enlisted members I admired. This was my chance to stand before an audience and captivate them with my eloquence as I gave a powerful, articulate speech about the Air Force, my job and specifically, what I do.

Airmen conduct ground-breaking aeromedical evacuation mission

Members of the 451st Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, executed the first U.S. and British aeromedical evacuation mission to airlift non-validated casualties. 

In the early afternoon of June 9 insurgents shot down an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter, killing three pararescuemen and a flight engineer, and injuring three others. The helicopter crashed as the Airmen were performing a medical evacuation mission in Helmand Province of Afghanistan.
