The Web-based project, "30 Days Through Afghanistan," kicked off Feb. 8 and aims to bring the people, the mission and the experiences of the men and women assigned to the International Security Assistance Force to a worldwide audience through the eyes of Tech. Sgts. Nathan Gallahan and Kenneth Raimondi.
Sergeant Raimondi, a broadcaster, and Sergeant Gallahan, a print journalist, are traveling throughout Afghanistan for 30 continuous days visiting each of the five regional commands and giving a first-hand perspective of the counter-insurgency mission. The two reporters will produce video and print news stories as well as document daily adventures through blogs and video blogs to showcase the troops in an interactive manner.

An NCO assigned to NATO's strategic command was named the 2009 Junior Military Member of the Year.
Staff Sgt. Sharica Jenkins-Hill, an Air Force knowledge operations manager for the Allied Command Transformation, provides administrative support to the futures, capabilities, research and technology branch.
Sergeant Jenkins-Hill contributed greatly to the success of their branch and ACT, said French air force Lt. Col. Jean Francois Calmels, the branch head for FCRT.

Officials with the federal departments of Veterans Affairs, Labor and Defense unveiled an improved Web site for wounded warriors Feb. 26.
"VA is committed to tapping into the full powers of the Internet to provide accurate, timely, easy to find and easy to understand information that improves the lives of veterans, service members, their families and all who care for them," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
The National Resource Directory is a comprehensive, free, online tool for wounded, ill and injured service members, veterans and their families. Visitors to the site can find an extensive range of information about veterans' benefits, including disability and pension benefits, VA health care and educational opportunities. The site also provides information for those who care for veterans, such as access to emotional, financial and community assistance.

Air Force officials here selected 1,269 of 13,741 eligible master sergeants for promotion to senior master sergeant for a selection rate of 9.24 percent, and the list will be released publicly at 8 a.m. CST March 4.
The average score for those selected was 665.85, with an average time in grade of 4.38 years and an average time in service of 20.2 years, respectively.
The average score was based on the following point averages: 135 for enlisted performance reports, 21.30 for decorations, 61.47 for the Air Force supervisory examination and 394.06 board score.

Department of Veterans Affairs officials announced the award of two contracts totaling $41.5 million to create a polytrauma center for the care of the most severely injured veterans and to improve the existing wards at the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center in San Antonio.
"A top priority for VA is providing greater access to VA's health care system and higher quality of care for the nation's veterans," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said. "America's veterans have earned the very best that this nation has to offer."

The ban on flash media use in the Air Force is still in place, although U.S. Strategic Command officials at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., issued an order Feb. 12 allowing limited use of removable flash media devices under very specific circumstances and "according to service guidelines."
Consistent with this order, Air Force officials here decided to continue its servicewide ban on flash media devices until Air Force specific guidelines and procedures are determined.

As a young teen gazing silently at the stars from a vantage point on Canada's Georgian Bay some 250 miles from his home in St. Clair, Mich., Richard Barry wondered a great deal about space and the possibilities of life on other planets.
Having spent his formative years on a small farm, he never dreamed his future would include a search for planets trillions of miles from Earth, and he never realized a stint in the Air Force and a Community College of the Air Force degree would launch his career as an astrophysicist and astronomer with the NASA.

"My mom passed away the day she was supposed to come home from the hospital," said Staff Sgt. Chaunce Foster, the 603rd Air and Space Communications Squadron job control NCO in charge here.
Though her ovarian cancer seemed to be in remission, Albetta Foster's unexpected passing just a month before Sergeant Foster's senior year of high school turned his life in a new direction. Already an only child being raised by a single parent, things proved to be much harder than expected at an early age for Sergeant Foster.
