C-130 crew delivers humanitarian supplies to Afghan village

Airmen from the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron dropped eight bundles of humanitarian aid from a C-130 Hercules Aug. 26 to a remote village in northern Afghanistan.

The Air National Guard crew, deployed from the 158th Airlift Squadron in Savannah, Ga, performed the mission to support coalition and civilian Afghans.

The eight bundles weighed approximately 4.1 tons and were packaged in a container delivery system, which assured the bundles and their cargo of food, water, clothes and blankets arrived intact.

‘Today’s Air Force’ features chief of staff first-year reflections

In this edition of "Today's Air Force," the chief of staff of the Air Force reflects on his first year on the job, the Global Positioning System gets a high tech upgrade, and Airmen turn to a new program in Iraq to get help dealing with combat stress.

Major changes have taken place across the Air Force in the short time since Gen. Norton Schwartz became chief of staff.  In an interview with Tech. Sgt. Steve German, General Schwartz talks about deployments, technology and transformation for the future.

Strike Eagles surpass 8,000 combat hours, support unique missions

Airmen from the 336th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron achieved a milestone here when they surpassed 8,000 combat hours in the F-15E Strike Eagle while providing security to coalition forces.

The aircrew for the mission included Capt. Jaina Donberg, the F-15E pilot and a native of Arlington, Va., and Capt. Nick Foster, an F-15E weapons system officer and a native of Martinsburg, W.V.  Launching the mission was F-15E crew chief, Senior Airman John Yates, a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and a six-year-veteran of the F-15 C and E family.

Aug. 30 airpower summary: F-15s deter enemy attack

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Aug. 30 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided armed overwatch for Abchakan and responded to a request for assistance to friendly forces taking small-arms fire. The F-15E conducted a show of force over a potential anti-Afghan force position deterring enemy action.

AF general thanks Coast Guard for continuous shuttle support

The Air Forces Northern commander and overseer of the Joint Task Force-Space Transportation System visited the Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral, Fla., to express his thanks to the team for their continued support of the JTF-STS mission.

"NASA's mission is one of international importance, and your work to ensure the safety and security of the astronauts and ground crew does not go unnoticed," Maj. Gen. Hank Morrow, told the Coast Guard members during a recent visit to the unit supporting STS-128. STS-128 launched Aug. 28 from Cape Canaveral.

Aug. 29 airpower summary: Reaper provides armed interdiction

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Aug. 29, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, F-16CJ Fighting Falcon aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces near Remak. As friendly forces neared a river, they reported receiving small-arms fire from enemy forces in treeline positions. Numerous strafing runs were made on the enemy positions finally eliminating the enemy.

Aug. 28 airpower summary: ISR aircraft perform tactical reconnaissance

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Aug. 28, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force B-1B Lancer, F-15E Strike Eagle and A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft provided armed overwatch for coalition and friendly forces near Orgun E. The ground forces reported receiving small-arms fire from a treeline position and an enemy compound position. Strafing runs were made on the treeline position and numerous precision-guided munitions were released on the compound with devastating results. Enemy aggression ceased.

Base of preference requests can now be initiated online through vMPF

Air Force Personnel Center officials have revamped the Voluntary Assignments Base of Preference Program to allow eligible enlisted members to initiate BOP requests online. 

Air Force members from the rank of E-8 and below can now apply for permanent change of station BOP, in-place BOP, or both through the virtual Military Personnel Flight Web site.

Senior Master Sgt. Vaughn Gibson, the Personnel Services Delivery Career Development and Readiness superintendent at AFPC, said the new program will affect about 10,000 Airmen worldwide and provides a re-enlistment incentive for first-term Airmen as well as allow career Airmen to continue their Air Force careers.

New vice chief of staff takes office

Gen. Carrol H. "Howie" Chandler is the new vice chief of staff of the Air Force, succeeding Gen. William M. Fraser III who held the position since October 2008. 

General Chandler comes to the Pentagon after two years of service as commander of Pacific Air Forces; Air Component Commander for U.S. Pacific Command; and Executive Director, Pacific Air Combat Operations Staff, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. 

The vice chief of staff assists the chief of staff with organizing, training, and equipping of 680,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. General Chandler also presides over the Air Staff and serves as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Requirements Oversight Council and Deputy Advisory Working Group.

Launch of civilian marketing campaign pivotal in filling Air Force jobs

Over the next five years, Air Force officials plan to hire 20,000 more civilians into civil service. To help bases better market civilian job openings and recruit qualified applicants for current and future jobs, Air Force Personnel Center specialists will roll out the "Your Future" marketing and recruiting campaign in September.

"The overall strategy of the 'Your Future' campaign is to help market and brand the Air Force as a premier civilian employer," said Shirlene LeBleu, AFPC's Civilian Force Integration Directorate's Force Renewal and Development division chief. "The initiative, once released Air Force-wide, will help fill civilian vacancies more quickly by targeting qualified, local candidates, as well as increase employment opportunities for military dependents."
