Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations May 30, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. 

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs flying a close-air-support mission over Asadabad destroyed numerous enemy fighting positions with guided bomb unit-38s. A friendly unit had taken small-arms fire from the positions prior to requesting the air strikes.

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations May 29, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II conducted a strafing run against a group of anti-Afghan forces firing rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns against a coalition forward base. The aircraft followed up with a show of force to discourage any additional attack.

A tribute to Senior Airman Ashton Goodman

On May 26, Senior Airman Ashton Goodman, Lt. Col. Mark E. Stratton II, the commander of the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team, and Army Master Sgt. Blue Rowe were killed near here from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device.

Over the past few weeks, this senior airman on the verge of becoming a non-commissioned officer seemed to transform in front of her teammate's eyes.  

Everyone already knew that Airman Goodman was a capable vehicle operator.

A military working dog attacks his handler on command at the training grounds on Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Military working dogs are enrolled in a 60- to 90-day training program where they are taught to detect explosives and drugs. They are also taught deterrence training and how to protect their handler.

Retiree ‘kissed by an angel’

For nearly 43 years, one man has practiced a similar combination of cardio-centric workouts followed by relaxation time in the sauna, a routine which, for the most part, was fairly uneventful for the first 42 of those years. One morning here in April; however, soon changed that.

"I usually walk about three miles every day, and I did just that April 28," said retired Tech. Sgt. George Smith, the city commissioner of Callaway, Fla. "I was wearing a sweatsuit (on a near 80-degree day) for my walk, got back to the Tyndall Air Force Base gym and made my way to the sauna, like always."

Joint team moves critically ill infants over holiday weekend

A joint team of U.S. servicemembers spanning the globe from Japan to Texas successfully moved two critically ill infants needing specialized care over the Memorial Day weekend.

The infants -- one 9 months old and the other 20 days old when moved -- were flown from Kadena Air Base, Japan, to San Antonio May 26 aboard a C-17 Globemaster III.

Both are military dependents needing specialized care at medical facilities in the continental United States. They are currently in stable condition at hospitals in San Antonio.

May 28 airpower summary: F-15E Strike Eagles destroy enemy cave complex

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations May 28, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, F-15E Strike Eagles and a Navy F/A-18C Hornet employed a variety of munitions during an engagement near Oruzgan. The strikes, using various guided bomb unit munitions, general purpose 500-pound bombs and cannon strafes, targeted anti-Afghan forces who were detected preparing for an attack on an Afghan and coalition unit. A convoy vehicle had been hit by an improvised explosive device, prompting the ground forces commander to call in air support.

President announces cyber security office

The nation's computer network infrastructure will be defended as a national strategic asset, President Barack Obama said here May 29. 

In a White House announcement, President Obama said he will appoint a cyber security coordinator for the critical infrastructure that all Americans depend on.

"We will ensure that these networks are secure, trustworthy and resilient," he said. "We will deter, prevent, detect and defend against attacks, and recover quickly from any disruptions or damage."

Servicemembers gear up to provide New Horizons for Guyana

Nearly 650 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen are preparing to take part in New Horizons Guyana, a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored annual exercise starting July 1 designed to strengthen ties with partner nations in Central and South America through combined quality-of-life improvement projects.

"New Horizons is all about Airmen working together with our joint partners, nongovernmental organizations and partner nations to benefit the community," said Lt. Gen. Norman R. Seip, the 12th Air Force commander.

Official: U.S. continues to monitor North Korean situation

The United States government -- including the Pentagon -- is "very closely" monitoring the situation regarding North Korea's recent nuclear device and missile tests, a senior Defense Department official said here May 28. 

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama is employing diplomacy and international pressure through the United Nations to persuade North Korea to eliminate its nuclear weapons program.

President Obama "has made clear the path in which the United States is going to take to try to resolve these issues," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters.
