Charleston members aid injured Airman

A Charleston Air Force Base senior NCO will be welcomed home soon after spending more than nine months in the hospital after a serious motorcycle accident with a gift from the hearts and hands of base members.

Master Sgt. Don Eagle of the 17th Airlift Squadron was struck by another motorist while riding his motorcycle home from work in April 2008. 

Sergeant Eagle has been hospitalized since then because of the accident that was not his fault. He is still in recovery and is currently paraplegic with only limited use of one hand.

Anticipating threats key to success, commander says

Anticipating threats is the key to readiness, the chief of the combatant command responsible for the military role in homeland defense said. 

Gen. Victor E. Renuart Jr., commander of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, said that when he took over the reins two years ago, he modified the Northcom mission statement to reflect this notion.

"I added the word 'anticipate' in there, and that really changed the culture of our command," General Renuart told an audience at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University here this week. "We anticipate each day what we might be asked to do."

Air Force allergist receives national award

Maj. (Dr.) Christopher Calabria, officer in charge of the Wilford Hall Medical Center Immunizations Clinic, was selected to receive an American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Award. The award recognizes outstanding research published in the "Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology," or JACI, by a developing researcher.

Dr. Calabria's publication, "The GILL study: Glycerin-Induced Local Reactions in Immunotherapy," explains that the concern for local reactions should not be a reason to limit glycerin in allergy shots.

President Obama thanks troops, pledges support

President Barack Obama thanked U.S. troops and pledged to provide the resources they need to accomplish their missions Jan. 28 in his first visit to the Pentagon as commander in chief.

President Obama spoke to reporters here after meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to discuss military readiness, "difficult decisions" on Iraq and Afghanistan and other national security threats and objectives.

"I want to first of all thank all of the men and women in uniform who are represented here. They are the best that this country has to offer," President Obama said after he and Vice President Joe Biden shook hands with a row of troops from all service branches who lined an E-ring Pentagon hallway.

13 Airmen take Worldwide Talent Search honors

The best 13 Airmen were selected from 77 bluesuiters gathered for the Air Force Worldwide Talent Search Jan. 11 throuch 19 at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

The Air Force's "top talent" were chosen after 10 days of auditions, rehearsals and interviews, which culminated in three nights of competition, as the best performer took home the "Roger" award for first place, and the second place winner received the "Wilco" award.

The winners are:
-- Best Female Vocalist went to Staff Sgt. Aisha Smith from MacDill AFB, Fla., and Staff Sgt. Naomi Keen from Lackland AFB took second place.

Jan. 28 airpower summary: F-15Es deter insurgent activities

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Jan. 28, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles destroyed several enemy fighting positions in the Nangalam region using guided bomb unit-31s and -38s. The targets included anti-Afghan heavy machine gun and other emplacements that were firing on coalition ground forces.

Yokota, Japanese firefighters dowse base fire

Yokota Air Base and Japanese firefighters fought a blaze at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Japan about 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 here, and there were no reports of any injuries. 

Five fire engines, two ladder trucks and a command vehicle from local fire departments as well as 38 firefighters assisted 30 Yokota AB 30 firefighters and their eight vehicles contain the fire to one single building. 

Firefighters from the Tokyo Metropolitan Fire Department were called to the scene at about 8 p.m. to assist Yokota AB firefighters.
